Presidents Cup 2022 Preview

Everything you need to know as the United States take on the International Team in the first Presidents Cup since 2019.

Normally held biennially on odd-numbered years so as not to clash with the Ryder Cup, the Presidents Cup’s normal schedule was disrupted by COVID-19, meaning the 2022 match will be the first since 2019.

The 2022 Presidents Cup will be played under something of a shadow, with as much talk – in the build-up, at least – about the players not taking part as those that are.

That’s because this is the first Presidents Cup to be played in the LIV Golf era, which has significantly changed the shape of both teams – more on that in a moment.

When is the 2022 Presidents Cup?

The dates for the Presidents Cup 2022 are 22nd-25th September.

Quail Hollow will host the Presidents Cup 2022

Which course is hosting the 2022 Presidents Cup?

The Presidents Cup is being held at Quail Hollow in North Carolina. The course hosts the PGA Tour’s Wells Fargo Championship (although that tournament was moved this year to allow preparations for the Presidents Cup to take place) and was the venue for the 2017 PGA Championship, won by Justin Thomas.

Quail Hollow will host the 2025 PGA Championship as well.

Who won the last Presidents Cup?

The Americans won the 2019 Presidents Cup, which wasn’t a huge shock, as they’ve won 11 of the 13 matches played since the event began in 1994, including the last eight in a row. It was close, though, with the International team pushing them all the way to a 16-14 margin at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia.

That scoreline generated plenty of hope and expectation that the next match could see the Internationals secure victory for the first time since 1998, but that was before LIV Golf came along. Both teams have lost a significant selection of players who would have been in their respective teams, but the Americans are better placed to cope thanks to their greater strength in depth.

So LIV Golf players can’t play in the Presidents Cup?

Correct. The PGA Tour has “suspended indefinitely” any player joining the LIV Golf tour, which also rules them out of competing in the Presidents Cup, as the event was created and is organised by the PGA Tour.

That means the United States Team is without the likes of Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Phil Mickelson, Jason Kokrak, Talor Gooch, Matthew Wolff, and Harold Varner III.

The International Team, meanwhile, has lost out on Cameron Smith, Joaquin Niemann, Anirban Lahiri, Louis Oosthuizen, Marc Leishman, Abraham Ancer, Charl Schwartzel, and Branden Grace.

Presidents Cup 2022 – The Format

Players compete in sessions of fourballs, foursomes, and singles – much like the Ryder Cup – although the Presidents Cup has more matches in the opening two sessions and runs for four days rather than three.

Foursomes sees two golfers from Team USA compete against a pair from the International Team, with team members alternating between shots and each team using one ball. Fourballs sees each player use his own ball, with the lowest score from each pair counting for the score for their side.

Five matches of one format take place on Thursday and five matches of the other on Friday, with four more matches of both fourballs and foursomes then being played across two sessions on Saturday.

Sunday sees all 24 players compete in singles matches, where every member of the United States Team plays against an International Team opponent in a head-to-head contest. A total of 30 points are available across the four days, with the team with the most points claiming the trophy.

Team caps for the 2022 Presidents Cup

Who will win the 2022 Presidents Cup?

Matchplay golf is unpredictable, which is part of what makes it so exciting, but the United States are strong favourites (1/7) for a reason.

The Americans hold a 100 per cent record on home soil since the competition launched in 1994, winning all seven contests held in the United States, and are chasing a record ninth consecutive victory in the biennial contest.

Their team for 2022 is very strong, with 11 of the United States players ranked inside the world’s top 20. The only outsider is Kevin Kisner, and he’s something of a matchplay specialist.

On the plus side for the International Team, three of the last four Presidents Cups have had a winning margin of three points or less, so it’s not as though they’re getting whitewashed every time they take on the United States. But you have to go all the way back to 2003 for the last match where the International Team avoided defeat, and even further back – to 1998 – for their only victory.

The LIV Golf absentees means the International Team has only four players with any previous Presidents Cup experience in their 12-man line-up. If Trevor Immelman’s inexperienced side can avoid defeat at Quail Hollow, it will be a huge upset.
