How We Test Electric Golf Carts

We're dedicated to making sure that we at Today's Golfer are clear and transparent on how we test equipment, so you know you can trust the information that you read.

Over the past couple of years, we have tested well over 50 golf carts that are currently on the market. Our Digital Editor, Rob Jerram, Equipment Writer, Will Shreeve-Peacock, and I carried out the bulk of testing, with assistance from the rest of the TG team and trusted external testers. Testing of all electric golf carts took place at various venues, including our home golf courses, Centurion Golf Club, The Inspiration Golf Club, Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club, Essendon Country Club, Mannings Heath Golf Club, and many other golf courses.

When testing electric golf carts, there are certain non-negotiables we're looking for, number one being stability and build quality. For a golf trolley to feature among the best, we expect its build quality to be at a premium and the stability to be spot-on.

Another necessary criterion with an electric golf cart is usability, which includes functionality and practicality. The best electric golf carts all excel when it comes to usability.

Certain aspects we look at depend on the model or features, including storage, size, accessories, battery, and charging.

Regardless of what we want or look for from an electric golf cart, we ensure we put all preferences aside to judge every golf cart objectively with an open mind. Every model has been tested over a period of time; some are tested longer than others, but each model is thoroughly put through its paces (rotations).

It's difficult to come up with a hierarchy of the best electric golf carts because every golfer has different wants and needs of a golf cart. However, having tested over 50 models, we've settled on the Motocaddy M7 GPS Remote as the ultimate companion, but we understand that not every golfer is looking for a GPS remote-controlled model.

Ditch your stand bag or push cart for one of the best electric golf carts and let your golf cart do the heavy lifting, allowing you to stroll the fairways stress-free

Jump to:

Owning one of the best electric golf carts is, without a doubt, one of the biggest luxuries in golf. Many of the best golf carts are electric because they require minimal effort to navigate the fairways.

Walking around the golf course with one of the best golf push carts is more convenient than carrying, but an electric golf cart is even more convenient and inevitably conserves more energy for your golf swing because you’re not having to do any of the work.

Depending on which mode of operation you settle on, your level of effort will change. Electric golf carts that require the least amount of physical and mental output are those that follow you around the course.

After those smart electric golf carts, there are electric golf carts that can be controlled with a remote, and while they require more thought and slightly more physical effort, they’re still a doddle to operate.

The final – and most traditional way of steering an electric golf cart – is manually. Manual electric golf carts might be the most strenuous to control, but by no means do they require a lot of effort.

Some electric golf carts are fitted with a built-in GPS device, which does increase the price of the cart, but it’s incredibly convenient to have a GPS device and an electric golf cart all in one. Obviously, the more features and technology packed into an electric golf cart, the higher the price. But having a more functional electric golf cart reduces mental and physical strain on the course, freeing you up to play better golf – and be less tired at the end of your round.

Whichever of the best electric golf carts you settle on will serve you well on your ventures around the golf course, but it is important to consider certain factors. The ones to consider most are outlined in our detailed buying guide. It’s well worth reading once you’ve viewed all the best electric golf carts. Once you purchase an electric golf cart, all that’s left is to swap your stand bag for one of the best cart bags, and you’ll be ready to hit the course in style.

Best GPS Electric Golf Push Carts

Motocaddy's most tech-packed electric golf cart

Best overall golf cart
Is this the ultimate golf cart? I would say so...

If you're in the market for a golf cart that does absolutely everything (apart from hit the ball for you), the Motocaddy M7 GPS Remote is hands-down the best electric golf cart.

You can control the M7 GPS Remote via the ergonomic and highly responsive remote, or you can manually control the cart by holding the premium handle. The remote range is very impressive - I've probably controlled the cart from about 100 yards away (I daren't try from any farther away).

The 3.5" LCD touchscreen display is extremely clear, allowing you to see all of the information on the screen easily. The GPS is equipped with over 40,000 global golf courses with full hole mapping.

My favourite addition to the M7 GPS Remote from the prior generation is the retractable anti-tip rear wheel. This wheel is 100 percent necessary when you're using the remote, and with it being always connected to the cart, there's no chance of leaving it behind.

Another amazing element of this cart is the CLICK 'N' CONNECT cable-free lithium battery. The cart turns itself off as you collapse the frame, and a simple switch turns it back on. To charge the battery, simply insert the charger into the battery while it's still in the cart.

If you're thinking you'd love the M7, but you don't want the GPS, the M7 Remote is available, and it's packed with the same tech (minus the GPS)!

Pros

  • Noticable improvement on the previous generation
  • AED locator is a fantastic addition
  • Very stable
  • Good battery life
  • Works with and without the remote
  • Incredibly clear and accurate GPS

Cons

  • I can't think of any
Weight 32 lbs
Folded dimensions 25.5" x 18.5" x 16.5"

  • Performance tracking & shot measurement
  • AED locator & CPR instructions
  • CLICK ‘N’ CONNECT cable-free battery

The best non-remote Motocaddy electric golf cart

Best GPS electric golf cart without a remote
If you want a Motocaddy GPS trolley but don't want a remote model, then the M5 GPS DHC is the trolley for you. Motocaddy's Downhill Control (DHC)assistance makes traversing even the most undulated golf course an absolute breeze.

The M5 GPS DHC features the same high-performance GPS as the M7 GPS Remote, packed with over 40,000 golf courses worldwide. The CLICK ‘N’ CONNECT cable-free battery is now a feature of all M-Series golf carts (excluding the ME Remote), and it not only makes charging easier but also makes powering up and down your cart much simpler.

This model comes as standard with the ULTRA lithium battery, which comfortably runs for 36 holes. Depending on how much golf you play and where you play your golf, you should be able to get two rounds out of one charge, but there's no harm in charging the battery after every use.

The cart is extremely quiet, and it runs incredibly smoothly with the all-terrain DHC wheels. If you don't see the need to spend an extra $700 on the M7 GPS Remote, this is the Motocaddy GPS golf cart you want.

Pros

  • Easy to use and accurate GPS
  • Copes superbly with undulating courses
  • One-click folding/unfolding is a doddle

Cons

  • Bag straps aren't the most secure
Weight 25 lbs
Folded dimensions 25.5" x 18.5" x 16"
Warranty Two years (cart and charger) | Five years (battery)
  • Automatic Downhill Control
  • Electronic parking brake
  • CLICK ‘N’ CONNECT cable-free battery
  • Crystal clear 3.5” LCD touchscreen display
  • High-performance fully integrated GPS
  • 40,000 Pre‑loaded courses
  • AED locator and CPR instructions
  • Next generation, high power 28V system
  • Nine-speed settings and battery meter
  • Adjustable distance control (60 yards)
  • All-terrain DHC wheels
  • Powerful, whisper‑quiet 230w DHC motor
  • Optional anti-tip wheel compatibility
  • Includes free accessory bundle
  • EASILOCK compatible

Best Remote Electric Golf Push Carts

A quality remote electric golf cart that's not going to break the bank

Best remote electric golf trolley
This is Motocaddy's budget-friendly remote electric golf cart. With the ME Remote, you're getting the same performance as the M7 Remote, just in an older shell. The style and design are the same as the previous generation M7 Remote, but that's all that's the same. Everything else is in line with the new generation.

If you opt for the ME Remote over the M7 Remote, you'll save yourself $300. In my opinion, it's worth making the savings, and then you can reinvest the savings into another area of your golf game.

The main differences between the Me Remote and M7 Remote are the wheels, but they're both all-terrain DHC tyres, capable of tackling all conditions. The anti-tip rear wheel isn't retractable like it is on the M7 Remote. Also, the ME Remote doesn't feature the CLICK 'N' CONNECT cable-free battery. Finally, there isn't an LCD display on the ME Remote, but when you're using a remote trolley, do you really need a screen?

Despite missing a few elements that the M7 Remote has, I don't think there are enough to warrant choosing the M7 Remote over the ME Remote. Especially considering they are the same under the hood!

Pros

  • Very reactive to instructions from the remote control
  • Easy to navigate with the remote control
  • Very stable on numerous terrains thanks to all-terrain wheels and anti-tip rear wheel
  • Works with and without the remote
  • Brilliant value

Cons

  • Not as stylish as the M7 range
Weight 32 lbs
Folded dimensions 25.5" x 18.5" x 16.5"
Warranty Two years (cart and charger) | Three years (battery)
  • Rechargeable remote control handset
  • Forward, left, right, and reverse remote navigation
  • 100m+ remote control range
  • Automatic Downhill Control
  • All-terrain DHC tires
  • Dual control mode
  • 360° Rotating twin front tires
  • Next generation, high power 28V system
  • Nine-speed settings
  • Turbo-powered motors
  • Includes free anti-tip stabilising wheel
  • Includes free accessory bundle
  • EASILOCK compatible

Best Stewart Golf electric golf cart
If you're in the market for one of the finest-quality electric golf carts, then you definitely want to consider Stewart. Stewart are known for their follow electric golf carts and their exceptional quality.

Stewart's "ultimate remote machine" delivers everything you'd want and expect

Best remote electric golf cart for easy transportation
The Stewart Vertx Remote electric golf cart was in development for two years, and it was most definitely worth the wait.

This cart is very highly rated among many of us at Today's Golfer, and we aren't the only people with praise for this machine.

Stewart set out with the aim of producing the "ultimate remote machine", and the focal piece of technology built into the Vertx Remote is the ATC (Active Terrain Control), which is a first in a golf cart design, and it ensures the Vertx Remote maintains its speed regardless of the undulation.

The remote has a 100-yard range and an integrated stabilizer that automatically deploys and retracts when the Vertx Remote is folded or unfolded.

Stewart have included a carry handle into the design of the cart, which makes transporting the Vertx Remote extremely easy.

An extremely easy-to-use remote-controlled electric golf cart

Best electric golf cart with a push cart design
The Alphard Golf Cybercart is a very sleek and stylish remote-controlled electric golf cart. This electric golf cart is very compact when folded, but it's fairly large when it's unfolded.

The front swivel wheel can either be locked, or you it can be unlocked for 360° of movement. The Cybercart is highly responsive. However, the range in which you can operate the golf cart with the remote isn't the longest. On some occasions, I've had to be about 20 meters away to move the Cybercart.

The battery is incredible! It slides into the frame, which enables the Cybercart to fold down incredibly small and save storage compared to other electric golf carts.

You can play 36 holes in one charge, and although it doesn't look like the most stable golf cart, it's able to tackle any terrain, thanks to the gyroscope technology.

The MGI Zip Navigator AT is extremely easy to operate, whether that's with the remote or controlling the cart manually.

With built-in downhill speed control, the MGI Zip Navigator AT requires minimal thought and effort when steering the cart downhill, but it maintains its stability.

The importance of the all-terrain rear anti-tip wheel cannot be overstated; this is the wheel that ensures the cart doesn't fall back on itself when travelling uphill.

A very clever electric golf cart that can follow you around the golf course

Best follow electric golf cart
Stewart's electric carts are very much like Bentleys – they’re made in Britain with high-quality materials, you don’t see them at every turn, and new models only come to market after years of hard work and innovation. And that’s exactly the case with the new Q Follow, or “the leader in follow” as Stewart describes their premium model.

Years of ideas and development have created the world’s most compact “follow” cart, coming in at just 21.3" high, 23.6" wide, and 12.6" deep when folded.

Eighth-generation “Follow” electronics mean this golf cart will go wherever you go, within a 50-yard range, following the Bluetooth remote that attaches to your belt or back trouser pocket, adjusting to your pace and stopping when you do.

You can also use the USB-rechargeable remote to bring the cart to you when you’ve found a ball in the rough, maneuver the Q Follow over bridges and around the green, or send it on to the next tee as you putt, adjusting the speed easily and bringing it to a halt at the push of a button.

It can also be used like a traditional electric model when required by attaching the remote to a catch above the handle and steering it manually.

The Q Follow uses a stabilizer wheel to ensure it won’t topple over when it follows you to find your ball after you’ve carved it into the hills or down a slope off the tee!

The innovative stabilizer, which automatically deploys and retracts during the trolley’s simple folding and unfolding process, works with the Q Follow’s low center of gravity to maintain stability and remain upright even on undulating slopes and steep hills.

There are eight finishes available, including seven colour options and a black carbon version.

This cart links up with Stewart's free smartphone app, which allows you to check exactly how much charge you have left and the health of your battery before you set out for another round.

Pros

  • Premium British-made quality
  • Very responsive follow technology
  • Multiple modes of operation

Cons

  • It will follow you wherever you walk
Weight 37.6 lbs
Folded dimensions 21.3" x 23.6" x 12.6"
Warranty Two years
  • World’s first three-dimensional distance measurement technology
  • 50-yard remote range
  • Integrated magnetic mounting plate
  • SmartPower battery
  • Simple tri-folding system with integrated carry handle

Best Electric Golf Push Carts: Buying Guide

Mode of operation

With electric golf carts, there are three different ways they can be controlled – depending on which cart you opt for. The three different modes of operation are manual, remote, and follow.

However much you’re willing to spend on an electric golf cart will influence which modes of operation are available to you. Manual electric golf carts don’t require as much energy to be exerted as push carts, but they do need steering by hand, unlike follow and remote electric golf carts.

Remote electric golf carts can be controlled without needing to put your hands on the cart at any point during the round. You can instruct your cart to move in any direction from a portable remote that easily fits in your pocket or attaches to your person. I’ve been using a remote electric golf cart for years, and I absolutely love how straightforward it is to control and how much easier it makes my rounds of golf.

The next step up from remote electric golf carts is follow electric golf carts. Follow electric golf carts work by sending a signal from a remote that you carry throughout your round, and the cart tracks the signal, following you around the course. Follow electric golf carts help to conserve the most energy and require the least amount of mental and physical effort.

Budget

Electric golf carts aren’t cheap, there’s no denying that. However, purchasing an electric golf cart should be viewed as an investment because ultimately it will make playing the game less tiring and less stressful, allowing you to play more golf for longer. It’s hard to find electric golf carts for less than $500, while there are some out there, the best electric golf carts start from around $900 and can cost up to as much as $3,000.

Obviously, not everyone will have $3,000 lying around to spend on an electric golf cart – which realistically is one of the biggest luxuries in golf – but if you do ever find yourself thinking about investing in an electric golf cart or upgrading your current model, you won’t be disappointed.

Size

Most electric golf carts are of similar stature when they’re unfolded and in use. Size only really becomes an issue when the cart is folded. The majority of electric golf carts now come fitted with lithium batteries that are built into the design of the cart, allowing them to fold smaller and take up less storage space.

Storage

Storage closely correlates with size, because the less storage space you have, either in your home or in your trunk, the smaller the cart you’ll need to purchase. There are amazing compact golf carts on the market, thanks to the savvy space-saving designs.

For some golfers, storage isn’t a worry. If this is the case for you, then the only consideration that should be made with regard to size and storage is how much the cart weighs and how easy it will be to transport.

Ease of use

Not every golfer is bang up-to-date with technology, and while electric golf carts aren’t particularly difficult to operate, some golfers won’t need all the bells and whistles some of the high-end electric golf carts feature.

More expensive electric golf carts are equipped with more technology and advanced functionality, but if you feel like you won’t benefit from this, then there’s no need to spend the money on it. For instance, the cart I use has a built-in GPS, which I do use, whereas some golfers wouldn’t. Therefore, you’re best off looking at carts without a GPS.

What you want from an electric golf cart is a model you’re happy using and doesn’t over-complicate the game.

Battery size

Electric golf carts vary in battery life. The longest battery life is 45 holes, and the shortest is 18 holes. There are also 27-hole and 36-hole battery options. Most golfers will only need a battery that lasts 18 holes. However, sometimes certain golf carts are only sold with a particular battery, whether that be 27-holes or 36-holes.

There’s no harm in playing one round and charging or leaving it to drop to almost empty before fully charging. The important thing is to never let your cart lose charge completely because they’re heavy to push.

Weight

Electric golf carts are naturally heavier than push carts because of the added tech and battery. The weight of the cart is only really a concern when you’re transporting it from your home to the course and back.

When you’re using the electric golf cart around the course, you can barely feel the weight of it because you’re not having to push the weight.

Folding mechanism

Certain carts on the market can be collapsed and erected in one simple step, whereas others require meticulous operations. While you will get to grips with any folding mechanism over time, you’re much better off choosing a cart with a simple folding mechanism because it will save time and energy before and after your round.

Benefits of electric

Electric golf carts massively help to conserve energy throughout your round, allowing you to harvest more energy for your golf game. The other benefit of an electric golf cart is that it makes the walk more relaxing, which in turn makes the game more enjoyable.

Carrying might be more pleasurable for some golfers, as could using a push cart, or it might just be that you’ve never used an electric golf cart before. I guarantee that once you have an electric golf cart, you’ll never settle for anything less.

Accessories

Electric golf carts are often spotted on the fairways fitted with all kinds of accessories. Some electric golf carts are sold with certain accessories, and others aren’t sold with any. There are specific accessories the majority of golfers will benefit from having, like an umbrella holder. However, there is a whole host of accessories that are available depending on your needs and desires.

It’s worth factoring in what accessories are included when purchasing one of the best electric golf carts because it might sway you one way or the other. Although it shouldn’t be the main consideration. Even if the cart you settle on doesn’t come with the accessories you wish for, they can be purchased afterwards for a very reasonable price.

There are several advantages of electric golf push carts, the biggest advantages being reduced physical strain, convenience, and stability. Walking the fairways with an electric golf push cart is extremely relaxing because you don't have to manually push or pull the cart; you simply have to steer it. With advanced braking systems compared to push golf carts and technology that helps with traction, electric golf push carts stick like glue to the golf course.

  • How long does the battery of an electric golf push cart last?

Electric golf push carts are sold mainly with 18-hole or 36-hole batteries. However, there are some models sold with 27-hole or 45-hole batteries. Every electric golf push cart I've experienced has kept its charge for the number of holes outlined on the battery and more. However, they don't tend to last much longer than that. If you purchase an electric golf push cart with a 27-hole battery or more, there's no harm in charging the battery after every round.

  • Are electric golf push carts allowed on all golf courses?

The vast majority of golf courses will allow electric golf push carts to roam the fairways. However, on the off chance that they don't, it's likely they won't allow all forms of golf carts. It might be the case that some golf courses don't allow them in certain months, depending on where you play. Alternatively, some golf courses might require specific tires if the course needs to be protected.
