Zip X3

from MGI

What we say...

The MGI Zip X3 electric golf trolley has a such a simple design and is incredibly easy to use.

MGI have been making golf trolleys for the Australian market since 1993. They’re still a fairly new name to the world of golf throughout the rest of the world, but they do make some of the best golf trolleys that money can buy. The MGI Zip X3 is definitely a model you should consider if you’re looking to purchase your first electric golf trolley, upgrade from a simpler model, or even downsize from a remote or all-terrain trolley model.

The MGI Zip X3 golf trolley offers a range of impressive features designed to make your golfing experience smoother and more enjoyable. Its lightweight 18-hole lithium battery provides ample power for a full round without the worry of it running out mid-game. This battery, paired with the foldable design, means the trolley is easy to store and transport, folding down compactly to fit in your car or garage without taking up too much space. It also comes with two accessory attachment locations for additional items such as an umbrella holder and a drinks holder, which are included when you purchase the trolley direct from American Golf

Plus, it does looks incredibly sleek.

First impressions

When I took the MGI Zip X3 trolley out of the box, I could immediately tell that it’s a really high-quality product. I felt it had a very sleek look to it, it was incredibly robust and well-built, and I much prefered the shiny finish on the body of the trolley to the more matte finish on MGI’s all-terrain remote model. The trolley isn’t too heavy either, it was fairly easy to carry fromy my garage to the car, and to lift it in and out of the boot once I reached the golf club car park.

The MGI Zip X3 comes with two large rear wheels, and one front swivel wheel. The two rear wheels clip into place on the axle, and I had to make sure I placed them the right way round, as there are specific left and right wheel for this model of trolley. I really like how MGI have incorporated their logo into the tread on the trolley wheels here, a great little unique design feature.

Battery and charger

Even though I had seen this battery connection system before, with the MGI Zip Navigator AT model, it still amazed me how simple it is. The 18-hole lithium battery simply hooks onto the back of the trolley, and pressing down the handle locks it securely in place. To remove it, I just lifted the handle and unhooked the battery—no messy wires involved, which was a big plus!

The charger for the MGI Zip X3 trolley connects easily underneath the battery handle when it’s raised, a red light indicates the battery is charging, and a green light indicates when it is fully charged. When the battery is full, the charger light doesn’t come on at all, to prevent over-charging. This is something that isn’t mentioned in the manual, but really useful to know – I had plugged it in one day before a game, and when no light appeared, I thought either the charger had broken, or I was having a power-cut!

When the battery is attached to the trolley, you can check the charge level anytime on the main screen of the trolley. The MGI Zip X3 electric trolley comes with an 18-hole battery, and after playing 18 holes with it, mine still showed a full charge. I don’t think I’d risk another round without charging it, but it’s great to know the battery life is much longer than advertised.

Setup and collapse

I found the MGI Zip X3 trolley incredibly easy to set up. It’s lighter than other electric trolleys I’ve used, so lifting it out of the car wasn’t a hassle. Only two handles needed to be pulled to unfold it—one near the battery and another by the top bag rest. Once I had it in position, the higher handle also allowed me to adjust the handle height. After that, I placed my golf bag onto the trolley. The base felt solid and supportive, and it looks like it would fit any cart bag quite comfortably.

I usually prefer using a stand bag because it’s more convenient when switching between the range and a full round. Like most electric trolleys, the MGI Zip X3 isn’t specifically designed for stand bags, but with the use of a bungee strap securing the legs of my stand bag together, I was able to position my bag securely so it wouldn’t tilt or slide during the round. The trolley comes with two elastic straps: one that loops around the bottom of the bag and another that clips at the top. The top strap is adjustable to accommodate different bag widths.

Folding the trolley back down was just as simple as the setup. I just released the same two handles to collapse it, then folded the top bag rest over the body before pushing the main handle down to lock everything in place.

On course performance

When it comes to handling, the MGI Zip X3 trolley’s front swivel wheels and ergonomic handle ensure smooth navigation across the course. The trolley displayed excellent stability, especially on uneven terrain. I also appreciated the small safety wheel that deploys from underneath the back of the unit, preventing the trolley from tipping backward on the steeper slopes when I’d parked the trolley up next to greens or tee boxes.

The MGI Zip X3 electric trolley has a range of speeds, which increased and decreased when I turned the dial on the handle. After using the MGI Zip Navigator AT for a while, I was used to the speed settings on that trolley, so it did take a couple of rounds to get used to the speed and correlating numbers on the X3 being slightly different.

Pressing down on the speed dial paused the trolley, and this is a function I used a lot out on the course, every time I stopped to hit a shot. I found that the dial occasionally lagged in response compared to other trolleys I’ve tried. This led to me bumping into the trolley a couple of times, as I expected it to start moving a little faster after pressing the button. A standout feature is the downhill speed control, which prevents the trolley from racing away from you on slopes, maintaining a constant, safe speed.

The one thing that really stood out to me on course was how quiet the trolley was, even going at high speeds. Aside from the usual noises of the wheels rolling across a path, or crunching over autumn leaves in the rough, it was practically silent.

I really like the digital display on the MGI Zip X3 trolley. It allows you to access the trolley battery level, speed settings, and distance tracking right at your fingertips for easy monitoring. The umbrella holder came in handy when I got caught out in September showers on the course, and even though I haven’t attached it yet, the drinks holder will defintiely help to save space in my golf bag, especially as we head into the winter months and the need for waterproofs increases.

Storage

I found that the MGI Zip X3 folds down into a compact size, making it easy to fit into the car for trips to and from the course. However, Similarly to the Zip Navigator AT that I tested a few months ago, I couldn’t find a way to store the Zip X3 in a stood-up position, which made storing it in my garage a bit tricky. Unless I mount it on the wall with some sturdy hooks, it ends up taking up quite a bit of floor space when lying flat. This wouldn’t be much of a problem if you have a spacious garage, but for those keeping their golf gear in a shed or even indoors, it can take up a fair amount of room.

Overall verdict

I am incredibly impressed with the MGI Zip X3 electric trolley. It’s a step up from the basic electric trolley models without being much bigger or bulkier, but it packs a punch with the features it has.

The trolley performed really well on the course, smoothly navigating fairways, and steering around bunkers and along pathways with no trouble. It took me a few rounds to adjust to the speed dial and the slight delay between pressing the button and the trolley starting to move. However, I was impressed with the overall build quality and design, and this is definitely a trolley I plan to keep using.

I highly recommend the MGI Zip X3, but if your course has a lot of hills and rough terrain, the MGI Zip Navigator AT would be an ideal choice. But if you’re looking for a lighter option for flatter, more straightforward courses, the Motocaddy SE would be a great model.
