What we say...

After seeing huge success with their hollow body irons, PXG have created a new family of Battle Ready 2 putters, all of which are hollow inside.

Since hitting the market in 2015 PXG hollow body irons have completely changed the industry. Pre 2015 no brand made hollow body irons, where today, Ping, Callaway, TaylorMade, Titleist, Srixon and Mizuno all do.

Having seen the impact their hollow body technology has had on irons, PXG have now taken inspiration from the phenomenon to come up with a brand-new range of Battle Ready 2 hollow body putters. The brand say by removing weight from the putter heads core golfers get a boost in MOI and forgiveness. And the technology works for what are considered the best putter head shapes in the business. Here’s how they do it.

What you need to know about PXG Battle Ready 2 putters

There’s nine head choices

Any putter brand that hits the big time has to have choice and options, as one size never fits all, especially when it comes to putters. PXG have developed a family of nine Battle Ready 2 models which cover off every golfers needs, no matter whether they be for a classic blade, cute mallet, or modern MOI model.

Some of the new Battle Ready models are refined from the previous family. There’s also a brand new high MOI Apache model, which boasts 39% more forgiveness than the next highest MOI model. All come in a sleek new platinum PVD finish.

Every head has four hosel options

PXG were the first brand to offer golfers multiple hosel choices with their original Battle Ready Collection, their thinking allowed golfers to fit any putter head to their individual stroke. The idea continues into the new Battle Ready 2 family.

The plumbers neck option has a full shaft of offset, so the putter face sits behind the hands. A mid-toe hang reduces the amount of rotational force at play during a stroke. This set-up is usually a good fit for slight arc players, but the brand also say this set-up can work for slightly straighter and stronger arc players too.

The four different toe hangs of PXG Battle Ready 2 putters

The heel shaft set-up gives the most amount of toe hang. So, the centre of gravity is positioned furthest from the shaft axis. This construction increases the amount of rotational force at play during the stroke. Which means heel shafts tend to work best for golfers who rotate the face whilst putting. Or, those who like the feeling of releasing the putter through impact.

The double bend shaft/hosel positions the shaft axis so it runs straight through the centre of gravity, which means the putter becomes face balanced. This set-up works well for golfers prone to pushing putts to the right (for a right-handed golfer) and those who like to feel they swing the putter in straighter lines.

Every putter in this range is available as an armlock putter. The armlock hosel is longer and more upright, which allows the longer shaft to run up the golfers leading forearm.  The armlock hosel allows the shaft axis to run through the putters centre of gravity, which means armlock models have zero toe hang and are face balanced.

There’s polymer inside

After 8 years of making brilliant hollow body irons PXG are experts at producing hollow body constructions. Each Battle Ready 2 putter has a 303 stainless steel head, just like you’ll find in Scotty Cameron putters. But, unlike the competition, inside inefficient mass is removed and replaced with the brands S-COR lightweight polymer filler.

The idea means each head has mass optimally positioned around the perimeter, so golfers get a high MOI relative to the head size. Averaged across the family that MOI boost is 10% compared to the brands previous putter models. And some like the Blackjack have had forgiveness improved by 20%.

Thinnest putter face in the business

PXG already make the thinnest iron faces in golf, which they say gives their irons high ball speeds, brilliant feel and great sound. Their approach is the same with the new putter family, where faces are just 0.055” thick. Like their irons, which would sound terrible and break quickly if the heads weren’t filled, the putters lightweight filler supports the face, whilst also tuning vibration and sound.

Like only PXG do, they’ve tested the hell out of their new face too. And thanks to having a degree of face flex (thanks to being hollow) the brand say internal test results show how their blades and mallets offer greater distance control when hit from the toe or heel, whilst also reducing skid against some of the biggest putter names in the business.

New face

Bryson Dechambeau goes to crazy lengths to eek out performance gains over the competition. And PXG have taken inspiration from the physicist taking time to orientate the dimple pattern on every putt. It’s an idea he believes up’s consistency by ensuring the interaction between putter face and ball always occurs in the same position.

PXG’s new pyramid face structure has a more aggressive mill. Which allows more dimple to fit into the faces pattern to optimize consistency, reduce skid and improve roll. The brand also reckon the refined pattern mixes the sound and feel of an insert putter, with the responsiveness of a traditional milled model.

Watch your weight

PXG’s premium equipment always comes with weighting options, and with multi-billionaire Bob Parsons at the helm it’s not surprising he wants the brands weight tech to be better than the competition. It means you won’t find more weight adjustable putters, than the Battle Ready 2’s on the market.

Through a fitting or the brands weight kit it’s possible to switch weights in 2.5g increments between 2.5g to 20g. That means you can set any of the models up at your preferred overall and swingweight, and golfers can counteract their miss tendency by stacking more or less mass in either the toe or heel.

New grip options

Having established themselves in the equipment market, PXG are now starting to look at creating their own better performing shaft and grip exclusives. For this family there’s seven new grip lightweight polyurethane grip options to choose between, all of which allow you to personalize each putter to your taste.

Three pistol models have varying degrees of flared and flat sections, all are generally more suited to arc stroke players. Where three straight models, which are usually more suited to straighter strokes, allow golfers to choose the size of their grip. There’s also an over-length model for armlock models.

PXG Battle Ready 2 Closer putter

The previous modern wide body Battle Ready Closer blade has been amongst our favourite putters for a couple years. Seeing the MOI nudged up by a new hollow body construction just makes the model even more attractive. Expect a golf ball width cavity back, sharp edged bumpers and an MOI 10.4% higher than the brands more classic size Brandon.

RRP: £349 / $389    MOI: 5189g-cm2

Verdict: PXG Battle Ready 2 Closer putter

PXG have hit massive heights with their hollow body irons over the last few years, as they’re able to combine the looks of a blade with the forgiveness of cavity backs all in a single head design. Having changed the iron market for the better with their concept it makes perfect sense to deploy hollow body constructions into making hollow body putters too.

Hollow body technology says PXG increases MOI forgiveness between 10 – 20% across the entire Battle Ready 2 family, and as the Closer has been an award winner here before it’s not too surprising a new more forgiving model gets the nod from us.

Our test pro wouldn’t have known the body of the Closer was hollow unless I’d told him which has to say feel, feedback and sound are totally unaffected by having a lightweight polymer freeing up inefficient mass inside.

Just like previous Battle Ready models almost every head comes with four hosel options and you have the ability to alter weight, include a stability shaft, and change grips as PXG will build pretty much whatever your heart desires. I love the Closer’s modern wide-body shaping, how PXG insists on 100% CNC Milling the head, the sleek new platinum PVD finish, and the long single sightline are the height of simplicity.

With so many options from PXG, I’d seriously recommend attending a proper fitting session to ensure you get the best set-up for your game. With some 100% CNC Milled putters currently running to £400+, the Closer is a huge amount of putter for £349.

PXG Battle Ready 2 Mustang putter

The words forgiving and blade never used to be uttered in the same sentence. But, by adding mass and angling the toe and heel of the Mustang whilst also upping blade length, this modern day blade is pretty forgiving. We like the golf ball width cavity back, and how a single sightline doesn’t interfere with the clean top edge. Which is useful if that’s what you use to align.

RRP: £349 / $389    MOI: 5198g-cm2

PXG Battle Ready 2 Brandon putter

The archetypal classic blade putter. The Brandon is named after an early PXG employee who sadly passed away in a motorbike accident, Bob Parsons though wanted to make sure he remained part of the company forever. So his name adorns a putter shape the company will always produce. Being able tobuy this classic head shape in whatever hosel you like, is a step ahead of most putter makers.

PXG Battle Ready 2 Dagger+ putter

The Dagger+ is based on putter models that were popular decades ago, but today it’s a great antidote to most modern putters. We love the simplicity and honesty of the design and thanks to the lightweight core, this is the most forgiving this style of flatstick has ever been. Thanks to the neck style this model is available in either a heel or center shaft set-up, which means it has either a strong toe hang or is face balanced.

RRP: £349 / $389    MOI: 4555g-cm2

PXG Battle Ready 2 Blackjack putter

The Blackjack’s wire-frame construction has a very compact size. We like how there’s lots of straight edges which can really help with setting up square to the target. Think of the Blackjack as an alternative to the TaylorMade Spider GTX and you’ll be thinking along exactly along the right lines.

RRP: £349 / $389    MOI: 5553g-cm2

PXG Battle Ready 2 Hercules putter

The Hercules is a cute little mallet, which makes it a great option for golfers who put a premium on using compact head putters, but don’t want to give up too much forgiveness. The shaping of the back bumpers isn’t quite a golf balls width apart, but they frame the ball beautifully and we really like the simple bold sightline. The model is named after the U.S. military transport aircraft.

PXG Battle Ready 2 One & Done putter

The One & Done has had a makeover for this new generation. Gone is the golf ball sized disc on the back and in its place is a super sleek wide body modern MOI putter. Two parallel lines on the back indicate golf ball width, and direct focus forward onto the intended impact zone. Expect a huge step forward in terms of cosmetics over the original One & Done

RRP: £349 / $389    MOI: 4781g-cm2

PXG Battle Ready 2 Apache putter

The Apache is a brand-new model for 2023. Its body shape and size lend themselves beautifully to fully exploiting the brands new hollow body technology, so this is the most forgiving model in the family. We love the elegant simplicity and how the back wings nudge up MOI without detracting from desirability.

RRP: £349 / $389    MOI: 7717g-cm2

Verdict: PXG Battle Ready 2 Apache putter

Back when rumors swirled in 2014 that GO Daddy billionaire Bob Parsons was about to enter the golf market many people said or thought PXG like countless companies before them was only ever going to be a flash in the pan. Ten years on not only is the company going from strength to strength it’s changed the market too. Back before PXG, nobody made hollow body irons, they just weren’t a thing. A decade later though every major brand now makes hollow body irons and most make more than just one.

It makes perfect sense then after seeing such success with hollow body iron tech, which allows engineers to create a blade-type look with the playability of a cavity back, that the same idea be transferred over to making forgiving hollow body putters. If stability and forgiveness are your aim in 2024 you simply have to check out PXG’s Battle Ready 2 Apache, it is a beast.

The PXG Battle Ready 2 Apache Putter with a Today's Golfer Best of 2024 badge

Yes, the model has a big head, but it’s got a very sleek shape, without too many angles to confuse the eyes, plus it’s available in four different hosel options. A move that allows golfers to choose how much toe-hang their putter has, which simply isn’t an option from most mainstream putter makers.

I love the bold single sightline, it’s the height of simplicity, I also really like how the black back wings are cleverly disguised to hide their size and shape.

The cherry on top though has to be the Apache’s massive MOI. While many putter makers don’t like publishing MOIs for their flatsticks the Apache comes in at 7717g cm2. That’s 35.4% higher than TaylorMade’s legendary Spider Tour and 27.5% higher than the same brand’s bigger footprint counterbalanced Spider S. All of which should be music to the ears of golfers whose putting strokes are wonkier than a drunk on a Friday night.

PXG Battle Ready 2 Bat Attack putter

The Bat Attack shape needs absolutely no introduction here at TG, the models been amongst our favourite flatsticks for several years. Expect a modern fang back design, a two tone body that highlights the intended impact zone, and a head that frames the ball beautifully at address.
