Likeable Frenchman Thomas Levet will miss The Open after he fractured his leg during ‘lively’ celebrations of his French open win.
Levet, 42, claimed victory by just one shot and was so elated that he jumped into a lake near the 18th hole. During his celebrations he fractured his shin and has today been told by doctors that will not be able to play in The open at Royal St George’s next week.
He said: “I’m extremely disappointed to jmiss out on The Open championship. I will have screws and a plate inserted to ensure that my leg heals properly. I will be off for six weeks, which is very bad timing. However, the memory of winning my national open will keep me going through my recovery!”
Levet’s victory came at Le Golf National, the course that won the 2018 Ryder Cup bid.
He had, up until that point, failed to qualify for The Open and only managed to make the field after the epic victory. Now his place passes to American Robert Garrigus.
Levet’s withdrawl comes just after the news of Tiger Woods’ exit.
