Sizes 6.5-14.5 | Color options 5 | BOA option? Yes | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Super lightweight | Easy to clean | Go great with any outfit
Cons: Doesn’t look as premium as the price point

A favorite spiked golf shoe with our editor and Tour stars

Previously, adidas have been criticized for making heavier golf shoes, but they’ve well and truly squashed that with ZG23. They are remarkably light golf shoes that push the boundaries of how lightweight footwear can perform.

It is a hybrid golf shoe that combines a recycled upper, with a Lightstrike midsole for maximum cushioning and energy return and is brought together with a six-cleat Traxion outsole.

Many brands would say that six cleats are not enough to give the best traction on a shoe. But the way the outsoles designed with spikes and a layer of strategic molds makes you feel closer to the ground and helps you transfer weight through the swing. The ZG23 also has 3D cradles down the side for lateral stability during the golf swing.

All that you’d expect from a premium-priced shoe that is worn by some of the world’s best players, it’s also fully waterproof.

RRP £189.99 | VIEW UK OFFER | RRP $199.99 | VIEW US OFFER
Sizes 6-12 | Color options 2 | BOA option? Yes | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Carbon power plate | Really supportive | Secure fit on foot and heel
Cons: Sock material hard to clean

Carbon and comfort combine to create the best spiked golf shoe of 2023

Hyperflex sees FootJoy take the use of carbon fiber to another level, developing a power plate on the sole to help golfers with stability and ground leverage.

The plate is partnered with an OrthoLite ‘fitbed’ that’s designed to mold to your feet over time for a perfect fit. We’re only a few rounds in with our pair, but the fit has definitely improved and it was impressive enough straight out of the box.

The HyperFlex is a comfortable trainer-style model but it still has the benefits of a year-round shoe. It has a 100% waterproof knit upper that is breathable, comfortable, and, vitally, has a stain-protected easy-to-clean upper.

The new padded heel gave us added comfort and support and the knitted bootie is integrated into a thermoplastic wrap that surrounded our feet and helped control lateral movement. It also kept our feet stable through the swing.

Adidas Tour 360 2022 golf shoes.

adidas Tour360 22 Golf Shoes

RRP £160 | VIEW UK OFFER | RRP $180 | VIEW US OFFER
Sizes 6.5-12 | Color options 4 | BOA option? Yes | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Boost cushioning | Premium leather | Great support
Cons: Heel rubs until shoes worn in

The premium, tour-proven, best spiked golf shoe

The Tour360 is amongst the best adidas golf shoes. adidas took the Tour360 back to the drawing board and the result was the Tour360 22, which we think is the best-performing model they’ve ever released.

The midsole is their most advanced ever, combining Boost cushioning with an EVA stability frame – a horseshoe-shaped piece at the perimeter of the forefoot provides lightweight stability and comfort.

There’s more stability in the middle of the foot thanks to the ‘3D Torsion System’, and the sockliner almost grabs the foot, especially in the heel, for even more cushioning, comfort, and support.

adidas worked closely with their tour stars to get the shoe right and help create the latest spikes in the Tour360. The cleats are directly injected into the TPU base for more precise locations. And despite being larger than previous adidas cleats, we found them to be far friendlier to soft greens.

Sizes
 7-12 | Color options 3 | BOA option? No | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Great value for money | Easy to clean | 9 spikes for great grip
Cons: Not as soft as other models

The best value golf shoes of 2023

Whatever you’re looking for in a golf shoe, good value for money is always a crucial factor, and this ticks that box.

The Under Armour Charged Draw 2 is still £95, but you get a great-looking fully waterproof shoe that provides comfort and superb traction. It has nine cleats with the RST 2.0 spikes securing the foot and stopping lateral movement when swinging.

It has a microfiber upper and a TPU outsole, and so far we’ve found that makes the shoe breathable, durable, and flexible. The ‘Charged Cushioning’ sole is uber comfortable and responsive.

This is one of the year’s most cleanly designed shoes, but it’s got substance as well as style with the Draw standing up well to wet and soggy conditions and proving easy to clean – a key consideration when buying a new shoe. It also comes with a one-year waterproof warranty just for your peace of mind.

Sizes: 6-15 | Color options: 5 | BOA option? Yes | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Quality materials | Ortholite insole | Superb traction
Cons: Take some wearing in

Mr old school of the best spiked golf shoes

In an era dominated by athletic-looking golf shoes, FootJoy haven’t forgotten their routes and Premiere proves they remain the master of the classic model.

For all the traditional styling, Premiere is packed with innovation and ooze luxury thanks to hand-picked leather, calfskin detailing, and sheepskin lining. The Premiere is fully waterproof and the leather is surprisingly easy to keep clean.

The Premiere comes in 12 percent lighter than the popular DryJoys Tour, helped by the new VersaTrax+ outsole. The ‘anti-channeling tread pattern’ gave me excellent traction across the entire shoe and I never felt any risk of slipping.

I like how FJ mixed harder and softer TPU compounds to make the shoe as grippy and comfortable on hard surfaces as it is on the course.

I was impressed by the performance and overall comfort. FootJoy’s Ortholite FitBed, which gradually shapes to your foot, works brilliantly and is seriously clever tech.

Sizes 7-12 | Color options 2 | BOA option? No | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Easy to clean | Amazing Arch Fit comfort | Good Traction
Cons: Not much color choice

The best spiked golf shoe for cushioning and comfort

This model has a Major-winning pedigree having been worn by Matt Fitzpatrick during his US Open victory.

The brand have dedicated a lot of time and effort developing the Pro 5. They analyzed 20 years of data and 120,000 unweighted podiatry foot scans in creating the model, which is undeniably comfortable.

It features a removable comfort insole with high-performance cushioning, an ultra-lightweight cushioned midsole, and a dynamic traction plate with replaceable cleats for maximum grip.

Skechers shoes, and the styling, divide opinion, but we’ve been impressed by Pro 5. It’s less bulky than some previous models, feels supportive is comfortable straight out of the box. The signing of Fitzpatrick will inevitably help the brand reach a younger audience.

For the price the Pro 5 is competing with some of the biggest models in 2023. The waterproof synthetic upper offers excellent protection, especially for those of you in North Europe!

The Ecco Biom G5 is one of the best spiked golf shoes

Sizes 6.5-11.5 | Color options 2 | BOA option? Yes | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: BOA lacing system | GORE-TEX | Terrific traction | Great support
Cons: Hard to keep clean without Ecco’s cleaning kit

The best waterproof golf shoe

As the originators and kings of spikeless shoes, Ecco don’t make many spiked models, but when they do they’re exceptional. Taking inspiration from the brilliant spikeless Biom H4, the Danish shoe giant reckoned they could make a more advanced spiked shoe that delivered comfort and athletic performance.

The G5 is the fruit of their labors and it is sensational. It brings fashion to the Biom family, while its premium leather upper and Gore-Tex membrane ensure the model is both breathable and 100% waterproof.

As you’d expect for the premium price, this is a very comfortable and supportive golf shoe that offers superb traction. We love the fit, especially in the BOA model.

Sizes 7-12 | Color options 4 | BOA option? Yes | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Excellent cushioning | Super supportive | Look good with any outfit
Cons: Similar to previous models

Best spiked golf shoe for out-of-the-box comfort

Puma’s Ignite range is a favorite among amateur golfers and a big hit with the younger generation. Ignite Articulate brilliantly combines comfort, style, and performance.

It has been designed to perform on any lie, with any stance, and any swing. This is the brand’s most versatile version in the Ignite series and we can see why.

The slip-on design has plenty of heel support and cushioning for out-of-the-box comfort and we’ve never had any issues with pinching or blistering.

The Articulate’s outsole has durable spikes that have been specifically placed to offer support through the golf swing and we had no issues with slipping or instability. Puma’s special PU Foam provides excellent cushioning, making this one of the most comfortable shoes we’ve worn.

Sizes: 8-14 | Color options: 3 | BOA option? No | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Subtle branding | Supportive insole | Breathable
Cons: Not too many color options

The discreet tour-quality spiked shoe built for every occasion

The athletic-looking, tech-packed golf shoe worn by The Masters champion Jon Rahm. The Ringer is a great all-rounder. It has a fully waterproof upper and the breathable mesh liner helps to keep your feet comfortable when the temperatures soar.

The molded insole is designed by orthopaedic experts and ensures the Ringer is as comfortable after 18 holes as it was on the 1st tee. On my feet, the first thing that struck me was how light and supportive they were. They looked great with trousers and shorts too!

I love the clean and simple look that’s coupled with the discreet branding and it will appeal to a huge number of us who don’t want loud and brash. The excellent Softspikes, felt like they really hunkered into the turf during my swing, and are easily replaceable when required, which should extend the shoe’s life.

RRP £159.95 | VIEW UK OFFER | RRP $160 | VIEW US OFFER
Sizes 3.5-15 | Color options 6 | BOA option? No | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Air bubble | Soft underfoot | Great grip
Cons: Not the easiest to keep clean

The most responsive spiked golf shoe

Nike have a huge band of tour stars wearing their shoes, so it’s no surprise they turn to them for feedback when designing new models. Brooks Koepka played a big role in the creation of the Air Zoom Infinity Tour Next%

We weren’t alone in feeling the previous iteration was too narrow for our feet. Nike have listened and increased the overall volume to give your foot more room, which means this will have more mass market appeal.

A new plush padded collar at the ankle helps increase support and cushioning while reducing heel slip.

The shoe now sports two Zoom air units and customer feedback has seen new spikes integrated into the heel and toe for much-improved traction.

There have also been improvements to the upper which is both breathable and durable. We also found it very easy to clean, which is a key factor in our reviews.

RRP £140 | VIEW UK OFFER | RRP $160 | VIEW US OFFER
Sizes
 6-14 | Color options 3 | BOA option? No  | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Great Traction | High heel support | Breathable
Cons: Slight creasing on toes after one round

The best spiked golf shoe for the most grip

The HOVR Drive 2 was designed by Under Armour to incorporate comfort and performance, and they’ve successfully pulled it off.

UA use their HOVR technology, designed for cushioning and energy return, throughout the sole of the shoe to support the natural motion of the foot and minimize the impact on the body. It is one of the most comfortable shoes we’ve tested and there were no issues with any pinching or blistering through a full round.

The microfiber upper means the shoe is lightweight but it’s impressively supportive, and breathable. When partnered with the waterproof membrane it kept us cool and dry.

A 3D-printed toe guard gives added durability, which is great for players like us who drag their feet through the golf swing.

The HOVR Drive 2 is fully waterproof and comes with a one-year waterproof warranty.

G/FORE Gallivanter golf shoes.

G/FORE Collection Gallivanter Golf Shoes

RRP £190 | VIEW UK OFFER | RRP $225 | VIEW US OFFER
Sizes 7-15 | Color options 2 | BOA option? No | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Classic style | Out-of-box comfort | Easy to look after
Cons: Not great with shorts

The coolest spiked golf shoe

While trainer-style golf shoes dominate our list, we still love classic-looking golf shoes. The Gallivanter is a traditional shoe with a modern twist.

G/Fore have created a full-grain leather golf shoe that is comfortable straight out of the box. The fully waterproof premium leather upper looks tremendous and is surprisingly easy to keep clean. It has also retained its shape after several rounds.

We love the sole. It’s ultra-lightweight and the non-replaceable cleats are durable and really cleverly positioned for excellent traction.

The ‘Comfort System Technology’ creates one of the best insoles we’ve tried, letting air flow to the feet to keep them cool and dry, while almost massaging the feet. It sits on top of a triple-dense foam footbed for seriously-impressive comfort.

This is part of the Collection series but G/FORE do a whole range of amazing Gallivanter styles. Our personal favorites are the Saddle and Tuxedo editions.

RRP £129.99 | VIEW UK OFFER | RRP $160 | VIEW US OFFER
Sizes 7-12 | Color options 3 | BOA option? No | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Instant comfort | Ultimate weatherproofing | Spike-like grip | Easy to maintain
Cons:
Upper creased easily

Our editor’s favorite spikeless golf shoe has the hallmarks of iconic models

Payntr roared onto the scene with the 001F golf shoe. It is a big favorite with our team and winner of a Today’s Golfer Editor’s Choice Award.

Payntr’s ‘Neverwet’ skin is remarkable. I found it was impenetrable, even in the worst weather, and it proved easy to keep looking new. The Ortholite X40 sock liner gave added weatherproof assurance and ensured they were comfortable out of the box – something I can’t say about every golf shoe.

I was impressed by the grip and that the sole didn’t hold soil, sand, or grit like a spiked shoe can. A couple of quick bashes together after the round was sufficient to get all of the sand and mud off after a UK winter round.

Rob Jerram, the TG digital editor, is a massive fan too. Despite having access to a host of big-name models, he’s chosen to wear them for more than 50 rounds.

The Ecco Golf S-Three Gore-Tex golf shoe is one of the best spikeless golf shoes.

Ecco S-Three Golf Shoes

RRP £195 | VIEW UK OFFER | RRP $220 | VIEW US OFFER
Sizes 7-12 | Color options 6 | BOA option? Yes | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Excellent traction | Super comfortable | Great heel support | Stylish colorways
Cons: Not the easiest to clean

The best spikeless golf shoes of 2023 is well worth the price tag

We rate this as the best spikeless golf shoe and Ecco goes the extra mile when it comes to comfort. The S-Three’s midsole uses Zonal Fluidform technology to create different levels of softness across the foot. The heel offers medium softness to ensure the right amount of cushioning and comfort, the central part of the midsole has higher levels of rigidity to deliver outstanding lateral stability throughout the swing, while the forefront of the midsole comes with the highest level of softness, for walking comfort.

My favorite thing about any Ecco golf shoe is the soft but durable leather Gore-Tex upper. It looks great, is breathable, and is 100% waterproof. I particularly like the S-Three’s tongue, which is thinner, lighter, and more fitted to the foot.

The E-DTS outsole has a large number of traction points which gave me excellent grip in all conditions.

Under Armour HOVR Tour Golf Shoes

RRP £150 | VIEW UK OFFER | RRP $180 | VIEW US OFFER
Sizes
 7-12 | Color options 1 | BOA option? No | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Unreal traction | Secure heel fit | Comfy sock-like upper
Cons: Firm TPU sole takes getting used too

Best for spike-like grip in a spikeless package

The HOVR Tour creates enough grip to rival spiked models. Put it like this, you could clearly see where we’d been standing after a 30-minute range session! It produces incredible traction, even in wet conditions.

The HOVR Tour combines the high-traction spikeless sole with Under Armour’s famous HOVR foam, which was first used in a range of their running shoes. It provides maximum comfort through cushioning and shock absorption, returning energy to the golfer and we’re big fans.

The TPU outsole is durable and lightweight with soft rubber spikes to help with better traction in key areas. The TPU continues up to the heel of the shoe to keep your foot secure throughout the swing.

We love the bold styling and the fact that even with a knitted upper, the shoes are easy to clean and fully waterproof. You also get full peace of mind from the one-year warranty.

RRP £159.99 | VIEW UK OFFER | RRP $159.99 | VIEW US OFFER
Sizes 3-14 | Color options 11 | BOA option? Yes | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Superb grip | Great looking | Suits all outfits
Cons: Leather creases above the toe

The best spikeless golf shoe for those with a bigger budget

One of the most popular shoes in golf, the Pro SL has an OrthoLite ‘fitbed’ designed to mold to your feet for the perfect fit. In our experience, it enhances what is an already excellent fit.

A StratoFoam midsole, takes the Pro SL to new levels of comfort. It provides softer cushioning from heel-to-toe over its predecessor and cushioning and makes walking 18 a breeze.

As for the upper, FootJoy’s ChromoSkin leather is just about as good as it gets. It looks great, holds its shape, cleans easily, and is fully waterproof.

FootJoy have also created a new version – The Carbon – which comes with a carbon fiber insert to reinforce stability in the heel while keeping the front of the foot flexible.

It uses the flex of the carbon fiber inlay to elastically snap back to its natural position resulting in more energy return while walking and reduced fatigue.

Pros: Excellent grip | Cool design | Versatile | Boost makes it super comfortable
Cons: Controversial colorways

Best and most comfortable adidas spikeless golf shoe

When adidas unleashed the Codechaos range the styling caused a bit of a stir. But beneath all the razzle-dazzle, is a shoe that does a really good job.

The sole reminds us of a trail or climbing model and provides exceptional levels of grip, while the upper, despite its looks, is completely waterproof.

It is made from 50% plastics recovered from the ocean as the German sportswear giant continues their sustainability mission, which we applaud.

CodeChaos is among the most comfortable adidas shoes and uses the Boost cushioning system which we have long sung the praises of. It also comes in a huge array of colors. It’s a great multi-use shoe.

 6-14 | Color options 4 | BOA option? No | Waterproof? No
Pros: Great grip | Super lightweight | Very comfortable
Cons: Could have more support when swinging

Best value all-rounder is packed with running shoe tech

The superb multitalented shoe from UA’s latest collection takes some of the best features from the brand’s leading sneakers and packs them into a golf shoe. I love how it has turned out.

As the name suggests, Phantom uses UA’s Charged midsole, which is responsive to movement and durable. The shoe has a bootie design with a sock-style fit which we found super comfortable and forgiving on our heels, even across 36 holes in a day.

It uses reinforcements to support you through the golf swing and it boosted my confidence over the ball.

This was one of the lightest weight shoes I tested thanks to the breathable mesh upper and rubber outsole. I found it delivered incredible grip thanks to the setup of the studs.

The Charged Phantom is not waterproof, but it comes with UA’s Never-Wet treatment, which I found perfectly adequate in showers.

RRP £199.95 | VIEW UK OFFER | RRP $239 | VIEW US OFFER
Sizes 6-13 | Color options 2 | BOA option? No | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: High quality | Comfortable | Stylish
Cons: Leather needs really looking after

The best classic-looking spikeless golf shoe and winner of a TG Award

If you’re a serious golfer that wants a classic shoe then you have to consider Duca’s shoes. Churchill is one of our favorites and a Today’s Golfer Editor’s Choice Awards winner.

It’s easy to see classic-style shoes and assume they will be hard-wearing or uncomfortable, but the Churchill is a delight for the feet.

The finest Italian Nappa leather upper is joined to Duca Del Cosma’s Airplay XI outsole to give you a shoe that fits beautifully and looks great on or off the course. Square-shaped nubs are strategically placed around the bottom of the shoe to give you maximum grip and stability when swinging.

The Churchill’s heightened heel improves your stance over the ball, while the breathable memory foam sole helps ensure you can play 18 holes or more in total comfort.

Not cheap and keeping the leather clean requires a bit of effort, but our favorite Duca shoe.

G/FORE MG4X2 Cross Golf Shoes

RRP £190 | VIEW UK OFFER | RRP $225 | VIEW US OFFER
Sizes 7-15 | Color options 4 | BOA option? No | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Color options | Comfortable | Great on and off the course
Cons: Mesh hard to clean

Best for wearing on and off the golf course

The MG4X2 Cross is about as far removed from the Gallivanter, which you’ll find in the spiked section, as it gets.

We weren’t sure about these when they arrived, but have grown to love them, and now wear them more off the course than we do on it.

MG4X2 is the perfect blend of stylish streetwear and on-course practicality. The waterproof G/DRY knit upper sits on top of G/FORE’s lattice midsole to give golfers the support and comfort needed and the molded heel cup secures the foot in place but doesn’t rub. The 100% rubber outsole has a sawtooth traction pattern which gives excellent stability during the swing.

Snow is our favorite color, but there’s a good range of bolder options if you prefer to stand out.

Sizes 3-14 | Color options 4 | BOA option? No | Waterproof? Yes
Pros: Can wear them all day | Great looking | Amazing grip
Cons: Tight fit to start off

Best spikeless golf shoe for all-day comfort

It doesn’t get any more iconic than Nike Air Max and the 270G is perfect for going straight from the course to the bar.

It looks like it’s been designed for the basketball court, but this is a superb golf shoe. The flexible-yet-substantial upper will keep you dry and, as you would expect from an Air product, the comfort is considerable with a giant ‘Air’ unit combined with a foam midsole.

It’s a great price for a multi-purpose shoe when you consider a non-golf Air Max will cost at least the same amount, and we love the choice of colors, especially the Black-Hot Punch-White option.

Pros: Super comfortable | Great heel and foot support | High traction
Cons: Style is not everyone’s cup of tea

Best spikeless golf shoe for the younger generation

Puma have made some of our favorite golf shoes over the past couple of years and the GS Fast is another standout at a reasonable price.

Having worn several pairs of Puma’s Ignite golf shoes and last season’s RS-G model, we can vouch for the comfort and versatility of their recent products.

The GS Fast takes its inspiration from the RS line and has a seam-sealed design that is fully waterproof. The molded TPU heal piece gives support to the low boot construction and kept our feet perfectly stable on the course.

The styling may divide the crowd, but we love it and have worn it as much off the course as we have on it.

A spikeless, lightweight, breathable, and waterproof golf shoe is what so many golfers demand, and Skechers have delivered exactly that. The Skechers Go Golf Elite 5 Sport is a supportive, athletic-style golf shoe designed for comfort on and off the course.

Their famous removable Arch Fit insole is superb. It is designed to mold to the bottom of your feet and disperse weight more evenly in your shoes, relieving pressure and resulting in a more stable shoe.

Skechers have transferred the Ultra Flight technology made popular in their running models to the Elite 5 Sport and it gives a soft and responsive cushioning to the sole.

They provide exceptional grip – we noticed very little difference between this and some of Skechers’ spiked models – and, vitally, they’re waterproof and easy to clean.

Golf Shoes Buying Guide

How do we test golf shoes?

Here at Today’s Golfer, our team of carefully selected reviewers tests and assesses each product over an extended period of time. Having tested tens of thousands of products over the years, we know exactly what to look for. We will ask every possible question about each product that we review. With a range of everyday golfers testing products you can rest assured that if it’s a situation that can arise for you on the golf course, we’ve already put the product through that scenario before recommending it.

With golf shoes, testing means wearing them for multiple rounds so we can determine the out-of-the-box performance in a variety of conditions. The overall performance of a product will depend on variables such as grip, durability, versatility, comfort, and fit.

We are lucky enough to attend product launches and meet the manufacturers to understand why they release a new product and its benefit to the consumer. The TG team pride ourselves on the fact that we understand and test all of our products to give you our honest and in-depth opinion on whether it is worth buying or not. The reviews and recommendations are there with you the readers as our highest priority, so we can recommend products that will help you improve your game.

How to choose a golf shoe

One of the most important things to get right for the golf season is your golf shoes. There are a number of different variables to consider when picking what’s going to be on your feet out on the course. To assist you along your shoe-buying journey we have put together what we think are key points to consider when buying your next pair.

Budget

The first thing we advise when buying any golf product is to set yourself a realistic budget and stick to it. You can spend anything from £50 to £250 on golf shoes, depending on the brand, style, tech, and materials.

With hundreds of different models available, setting a budget for your next golf shoes will help to narrow down your search.

If the brand isn’t important to you then you’re more likely to be able to spend less money than if your heart is set on a pair of current FootJoy or Ecco shoes for example.

If you’re just starting out in golf, this is your first pair of golf shoes, or you only play occasionally we’d recommend setting a lower budget. Firstly, there’s no point in blowing a fortune on the shoes if you’re going to discover you don’t actually like the game as much as you hoped or only get on the course a couple of times a year. Secondly, the money you save on shoes can be spent adding other equipment, paying for some rounds, or getting yourself some lessons.

Spiked or spikeless

Many of the best golf shoes seen above and across the best brands now are split evenly between spiked and spikeless which both have their advantages and disadvantages.

Spiked

Golf shoes with spikes tend to give better grip/traction out on the golf course with them having soft spikes placed around the outsole. Spiked shoes are the more durable option as they have replaceable spikes, meaning if you look after and replace them there should be no reason they won’t last a long time.

With spikes on the outsole, the shoe has added pressure points on the foot which can result in a slightly less comfortable fit. Spiked golf shoes are less versatile as they aren’t designed to be worn both on and off the golf course.

Spikeless

The spikeless option may not give golfers as much traction as spiked golf shoes but they have come a long way in recent years. Spikeless golf shoes tend to feature small rubber molds on the outsole to aid grip, however, with technological advancements, companies are finding new ways to improve spikeless traction.

The use of compounds such as TPU has allowed brands like Under Armour and Ecco to produce a spikeless shoe that, when partnered with rubber molds, gives arguably as much traction as a spiked shoe. Spikeless shoes are becoming more and more durable, and modern styling makes them more attractive as an everyday shoe. With brands using tech from their running shoes in golf shoes, they are often uber-comfortable too.

Spikeless shoes are lighter and much more versatile. They’re a shoe that you can drive in and hit drives in.

Waterproofing

Some of you may live in an area of the world that gets a lot of rain, making a waterproof shoe a must. Or you may be a golfer that likes to prepare for any outcome on the course and doesn’t want to be left with soggy feet from an unexpected shower.

In the UK waterproof shoes can be a sensible option when picking out what to wear on the course. Many golfers buy a waterproof pair for winter, and a more breathable lightweight shoe for summer.

Buying a pair of shoes that are guaranteed waterproof can cost a little more so if you live in a part of the world where rain rarely falls (hello Dubai), then you can save yourself a bit of cash with a non-waterproof model.

Correct fit

Arguably the most important part of picking out a new golf shoe is getting something that fits your feet correctly. This will help prevent blisters and stop your feet from moving around, which can limit your control during the swing.

When putting on a shoe for the first time always make sure there is no pinching or movement. When your foot slides in you always check your toes fit at the end of the shoe and have a walk around in them to make sure they feel comfortable. We’d even recommend making a few golf swing motions to ensure they are fit for purpose.

Under Armour use ‘normal’ laces throughout their range of shoes. But most brands including FootJoy, adidas, Nike, and Ecco use a system called BOA. This lets you twist a dial to tighten the specially formulated laces and can provide a better fit that doesn’t loosen when playing. While BOA often creates a more secure fit, the look and feel aren’t for everyone and BOA models tend to be more expensive.

Comfort

With your average round of golf being more than four hours, comfort is king when buying golf shoes. If your shoes are uncomfortable and hard-wearing on your feet, your mind will be distracted from playing good golf.

Try to find a shoe with good cushioning for the bottom of your foot and around the heel. Good heel and ankle support will keep your foot secure and will help with your golf swing.

You want to make sure that the shoe isn’t too soft as that may also hinder you in the long run as it won’t be as supportive. Look for a balance of support and comfort to make the most out of your new golf shoes.

Styling

Modern golf shoes come in many styles. It’s not all about the traditional look on the golf course anymore. A classic-looking shoe can now be seen next to the latest pair of sneakers on the tee box.

There are golf shoes out there for everyone, from brogues to lightweight, knitted models. You need to consider what shoes you wear and like wearing off the course and then you should have no trouble getting a style that suits you on the course.

We’d always recommend you thoroughly research all of the options and create a shortlist to try.

Best Golf Shoes: FAQs

What are considered to be the best golf shoes?

There is no real rhyme or reason as to what are the best golf shoes for playing in. All of the shoes on our list and many others on the market will provide a comfortable and supportive fit for you out on the golf course. The main thing you need to focus on when picking a new pair of golf shoes is something that fits well, is supportive, suits your style, and is ideal for the conditions you play golf in. If you are somewhere cold and wet it would be better to pick a spiked waterproof pair than someone who lives somewhere hot and dry they may need a spikeless breathable shoe.

Do any pro golfers wear spikeless golf shoes?

Most of the golfers on tour wear spikeless golf shoes because they play in warm conditions on perfectly manicured courses, meaning they don’t need extra traction. Spiked shoes will make an appearance on tour if the weather takes a turn for the worse. Collin Morikawa opts to wear his adidas ZG23 spiked golf shoes through the season.

What golf shoes does Tiger Woods wear?

Tiger Woods has recently made the decision to switch to FootJoy golf shoes, despite his long-term relationship with Nike. After incidents off the golf course, Woods now has less mobility and needed a change of golf shoes to provide a more stable base for his golf swing. He wore FootJoy Premiere shoes throughout last year and at the 2023 Genesis Invitational.

Do golf shoes really make a difference?

Golf shoes are one of the most essential things you need before taking to the course. Yes, many of the shoes above look like the sneakers you buy for daily life, but they’re purpose-built to deal with the conditions golfers face across 18 holes.

Golf shoes are made to be walked in all day over different terrains and provide grip and traction during the golf swing. We’d never recommend wearing a ‘normal’ trainer or sneaker when playing or practicing golf.
