US PGA Championship 2023: Who is in the field?

LIV Golfers are eligible to play in the US PGA Championship at Oak Hill Country Club, but Tiger Woods is one of several big names missing out.

Today’s Golfer’s 2023 Major coverage is brought to you in association with TaylorMade.

The year’s second men’s Major Championship gets underway on May 18 as Justin Thomas defends the Wanamaker Trophy at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York.

The event will once again feature the strongest field of the year despite the absence of Tiger Woods, who is likely to miss the rest of the season after undergoing subtalar fusion surgery on his ankle following his withdrawal from the Masters.

Will Zalatoris is the only top-100 player in the Official World Golf Ranking who did not accept an invite. The World No.9 is currently recuperating after having back surgery last month.

The field for the PGA Championship includes 31 Major Champions and all members of the most recently played Ryder Cup team, provided they are still ranked inside the top 100 in the world. As is tradition, the top-20 finishers from the 2023 PGA Professional Championship have also received an invite.

Justin Thomas won the PGA Championship for the second time with his victory at Southern Hills.

Among the players slated to compete are 18 LIV Golf members, including Cameron Smith, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Patrick Reed.

American Sihwan Kim, who has yet to finish higher than 45th in any LIV event this season, has also qualified after finishing inside the top three on the Federation of International Tours ranking that is being used for the first time this year.

The final spot to complete the full 156-player field will be allocated to the winner of the AT&T Bryon Nelson in Texas this week, but the list is still subject to change with alternates. World No.10 Jordan Spieth is currently a doubt with “severe” wrist pain

The PGA of America do have the ability to extend invites to whoever they want, which might explain how Paul Casey and Joel Dahmen got in despite failing to meet the qualification criteria. Among the big names to miss out include Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Sergio Garcia, Louis Oosthuizen and Matthew Wolff.

Jason Dufner, who won the last playing of the PGA Championship at Oak Hill in 2013, and Martin Kaymer, the 2010 champion, have both withdrawn and been replaced in the field.
