Langer wins first Senior Major

Bernhard Langer continued his fine form as a Senior golfer by winning the Senior Open presented by MasterCard around the unforgiving Carnoustie links. Going into the final round three shots ahead of US Ryder Cup captain Corey Pavin, he played solidly rather than spectacularly in the final round to win by a shot from the American. Shooting 72 in the final round , his lead was cut to one briefly during the final round, but Pavin’s final round 70 came up just short.
Langer joined the Senior ranks nearly three years ago, and as well as winning back-to-back Order of Merit titles, has had top-10 finishes in the 12 Senior majors he has played. And yet, this was his first major title, since winning his second Green Jacket at Augusta in 1993.
“This ranks very high,” he said afterwards. “Obviously it was pretty close to my tw3o US Masters Championships and the Ryder Cup stuff I won. It’s a thrill to finally hold this trophy. I knew Corey wouldn’t go away and I knew I would be nervous. As you know I’ve always wanted to win the Open, and this is the next best thing.”
